The National Park Service's visitor center in Georgetown is located on Thomas Jefferson Street, one block South (toward the River). The visitor entrance is on the towpath (North) side of the canal, and the sight-seeing barge is located here in Justice William Douglas Park also. This view is from the NPS's interior office on the first floor, which is not generally open to visitors. This townhouse offers wonderful viewes of the Canal from its 19th Century windows. A large lithograph of the old canal hangs over the ancient fireplace. As with most townhouses located near the canal, the floors creak, the walls aren't plumb, but the structure is reasonably sound and well-maintined. |
